Don't let anyone talk you out of 30 minutes at the book shop. Those 2 hours could be the most magical 5 hours of your life.
You said thirty minutes. You meant thirty minutes. You walked in meaning thirty minutes with the complete and genuine intention of a person who has said thirty minutes and meant it many times before and has never once actually done thirty minutes but this time was going to be different.
It was not different.
It was five hours. It was the most magical five hours of the week. The tote bag situation is being managed. The stack on the floor beside the tote is coming home regardless of the tote situation. The clock on the wall says what it says and you are not ready to look at it yet.
This is the bookstore. Time works differently here. Everyone inside has tacitly agreed to this arrangement. The cat knows. The bookseller knows. The clock knows and has nothing to say about it that you want to hear right now.
Thirty minutes. Every time. The most magical five hours of your life. Every time.
✦ ABOUT THIS BOOKMARK
A richly illustrated scene of a beloved independent bookstore on a Saturday afternoon — not a chain, not a corporate space, but the specific kind of small warm independent bookstore that has been in the same location for twenty years and smells like old paper and new possibility and something warm from the café in the back corner and that has a cat and a staff recommendation card in every section written by people who have genuinely read the books and genuinely want you to.
The bookstore exterior is visible at the very top — a warm and slightly worn independent bookstore façade on a good street, a hand-painted sign in the particular lettering of a sign painted with more love than formal training, a window display arranged with the artfulness of a bookseller who has opinions about which books should be facing out. A clock above the door showing a time that will be relevant shortly. The door standing open in the warm afternoon — the warm amber interior visible through the open door against the afternoon gold outside, the threshold between the ordinary world and the bookstore world visible as a change in the quality of light.
Inside — shelves floor to ceiling full to the particular beautiful excess of a bookstore that has been loved into having more books than it technically has room for and has found room for them anyway. A rolling library ladder on one wall. Staff recommendation cards in every section in different handwritings. Books shelved vertically and horizontally and stacked and wedged into spaces that should not contain them.
The bookstore cat asleep on the counter with the authority of a creature that was here before the current staff and will be here after and regards every customer with the same benign indifference of someone who has seen it all before and is still here.
The center of the composition is the moment of time dissolving — the wall clock showing a time significantly later than it should be. A tote bag full to a degree that raises logistical questions about the journey home. A stack of books on the floor beside the tote — the overflow, the books that are definitely coming home regardless. A coffee cup from the bookstore café slightly neglected on top of a shelf where it was set down while someone looked at one more thing.
The reading nook in the back — a comfortable chair in the golden light of later afternoon, a coat draped over the arm, an empty coffee cup, an open book on the cushion. Someone came in thirty minutes ago. They are not coming out soon. They are fine. They are thriving.
The afternoon light through the bookstore windows is doing the bookstore thing — warmer in here than out there, more amber, the kind of light that makes books look like they are lit from within which they are.
Thirty minutes. Those two hours. The most magical five hours. The tote bag is full. The stack is on the floor. The cat is asleep. The clock is honest. Everything is exactly as it should be.

✦ A NOTE ON THE MATH
Thirty minutes. Two hours. Five hours.
The numbers escalate because that is what bookstore time does. It escalates. The thirty minutes was genuine. The two hours was inevitable. The five hours was the bookstore doing what the bookstore does which is be exactly what you needed more of than you planned for.
The math is wrong. The experience is right. These two things are always both true simultaneously in any bookstore worth its shelves.
✦ THE CLOCK
The clock on the wall in this bookmark is honest. It shows a time that is several hours past the time that was promised to the errand that was supposed to happen after or the person who was waiting or the dinner that starts earlier than this.
The clock is correct. The time is what it says. It was worth it. It was always going to be worth it. It will be worth it next time too.
The clock knows this. The clock is not judging. The clock has been on this bookstore wall for fifteen years and it has seen this happen every Saturday and it will see it happen next Saturday and the clock is honestly fine with it.
✦ THE BOOKSTORE CAT
The bookstore cat is asleep on the counter in this bookmark.
The bookstore cat was here before the current staff. The bookstore cat will be here after the current staff. The bookstore cat has seen every version of the thirty minutes that became five hours and has formed no opinion about it beyond the general opinion that humans are doing their best and it is not the cat's job to intervene.
The cat approves of the tote bag situation. The cat approves of the stack on the floor. The cat has no comment on the clock.
