In Three Pines the light is always on.

For every reader who has walked into Three Pines for the first time and never quite walked back out.
For every reader who has stood in the Bistro in their imagination — warm mug in hand, fire burning in the stone fireplace, Gabri bringing something extraordinary from the kitchen — and felt more at home than they feel in most places they have actually been.
For every reader who has read the four things that Gamache teaches and written them down somewhere and kept them somewhere and returned to them when they needed to be reminded of what courage actually looks like.
This bookmark is for all of you. Three Pines has been waiting for you to have it.

✦ ABOUT THIS BOOKMARK
A richly illustrated scene of Three Pines in the deep of a Quebec winter — Louise Penny's beloved fictional village rendered as one continuous immersive illustration that moves from the serious blue-gray of the winter sky at the top to the warm amber of the Bistro light at the bottom, the entire emotional arc of the Inspector Gamache series told in the distance between those two things.
The village reveals itself as the eye moves through the scene — the ring of Victorian homes around the green glowing warm amber in their windows against the winter white, each one slightly different from the others, each one belonging to someone the reader has come to love across more than twenty novels.

The three great pine trees stand enormous and permanent in the center of the composition — dark and heavy with snow against the winter sky, the three trees that give the village its name and that are the visual and spiritual anchor of everything Louise Penny has built here.
The Bistro glows in the lower portion of the scene with the warmest and most welcoming amber light in the entire composition. Through the window the fire is burning in the stone fireplace. The mismatched chairs are pulled close to the warmth. There are books on every surface because of course there are. An open book face-down on a table near the window — the reader has just stepped away and will be back. The light from the Bistro window spills across the deep snow outside and turns the blue-white of the Quebec winter warm amber wherever it touches.

The deep forest presses at the edges of the composition — the dark trees that surround Three Pines and make it both protected and slightly isolated, the forest where things are sometimes found that should not be found, the darkness that is always at the edges of the warmth in these novels.
A set of deliberate footprints in the snow moves through the village green toward the Bistro. One set. Large and thoughtful. Moving through Three Pines the way Armand Gamache has always moved through Three Pines — carefully and with complete attention and toward the warmth.
He is here. The light is on. Everything will be all right or it will be understood why it is not and that is the closest thing to all right that a mystery can offer.

✦ THE FOUR THINGS
Armand Gamache teaches his students that there are four things that are the hardest things a person can say and the most important.
I don't know. I was wrong. I need help. I'm sorry.
This bookmark does not have those words written on it because they belong to Louise Penny and to Gamache and to every reader who has encountered them and felt them land. But they are present in the composition the way they are present in every novel in the series — woven into everything, visible to anyone paying attention, the entire moral architecture of Three Pines built on them.

✦ THE FOOTPRINTS
There are footprints in the snow in this bookmark. One set. Large and deliberate and moving through the village green toward the Bistro light.
Gamache is not depicted. He never needs to be depicted. He is always most himself in what he leaves behind — the changed people, the solved mysteries, the communities restored to something like peace.
The footprints are enough. They always are.

✦ A WORD ABOUT THREE PINES
Three Pines does not appear on any map. Louise Penny has said so. It cannot be found by anyone who is not ready to find it.
Every reader who has found it knows exactly what she means.
