For every reader who picked up A Game of Thrones and understood within the first hundred pages that this was not like other fantasy novels — that the world had weight and the history had depth and the characters had the specific gravity of people who were going to make choices that could not be taken back and who were going to live with those choices in ways that most fantasy fiction never demands of its characters.
For every reader who loved a character and lost them and kept reading because George R.R. Martin had built a world so real and so specific that leaving it was not an available option regardless of what he had just done to the person you loved most in it.
For every reader who understands that the Iron Throne is the most dangerous seat in any fictional world because it is made from the weapons of defeated enemies and it has never stopped drawing blood from everyone who reaches for it.
For every reader who looks at the Wall in the far North and understands that the real threat has never been in King's Landing — that while everyone is playing the game of thrones something far more dangerous is moving in the dark beyond the ice.
For every reader who is still waiting for The Winds of Winter with a patience that has become its own kind of devotion.
This bookmark is for all of you. Winter is coming. It has always been coming. The game is still being played. You win or you die. There is no middle ground.
✦ ABOUT THIS BOOKMARK
A richly illustrated scene that travels from the frozen Wall in the far North at the very top through the full landscape of the Seven Kingdoms in the center to the Iron Throne and King's Landing at the very bottom — one continuous immersive illustration that contains the full world of George R.R. Martin's epic series rendered as one unified vertical painting.
The Wall dominates the very top of the composition — the seven hundred foot wall of ancient ice in the particular deep luminous blue-white of glacial ice that has been compressed for thousands of years and that carries within it the cold blue light of something ancient and enormous and entirely serious about what it is keeping out. Castle Black gray against the Wall behind it. Beyond the Wall at the very top edge the Haunted Forest visible as dark ancient shapes in the frozen beyond — the world north of everything the realm thinks it understands, the cold that is not a season but a permanent condition of existence.
Moving down through the composition the Northern landscape gives way to Westeros in its full variety — Winterfell's dark towers and ancient stone against the Northern sky, the direwolf shape of House Stark dark against the snow, the Trident's rivers crossing the middle landscape, the Vale mountains at one edge, the green of the Reach at another. The Seven Kingdoms rendered as the vast and varied world that seven hundred years of Westerosi history have made them.
A dragon moves through the middle sky — enormous and unmistakable, wings spread against the Westerosi air, dragon fire a burst of vivid orange-gold that is the warmest and most vivid color event in the entire composition. The fire of the title present in the middle of the composition. The ice of the title pressing down from the Wall above. The two meeting in the dramatic center of the bookmark the way they have been moving toward each other since the first page of the first book.
The Red Keep fills the lower middle — warm red stone on its hill above Blackwater Bay, magnificent and ominous in equal measure, the castle that everyone is fighting to control and that has never been worth the price of controlling it. The Iron Throne is visible in the lower portion — dark cold iron, the swords of defeated enemies visible in its construction, the throne that Aegon forged and that has drawn blood from every person who has sat on it or reached for it, uncomfortable by design, dangerous by nature, the thing at the center of everything and worth nothing that anyone has paid for it.
The ice is at the top. The fire is in the middle. The throne is at the bottom. The game is being played. Winter is coming. There is no middle ground.
