Magic is just love with nowhere else to go.
For every reader who has stood in the Owens garden in their imagination — warm summer night, owls in the old trees, the kitchen window glowing amber, the midnight margaritas on the porch railing — and felt more at home than they feel in most places they have actually been.
For every reader who understood that the curse on the Owens women is not really about men dying but about love being so enormous and so specific that the world does not always know what to do with it.
For every reader who has made midnight margaritas with someone they love and called it a ritual because it is.
For every reader who keeps herbs on their windowsill and talks to their plants and considers this entirely reasonable which it is.
This bookmark is for all of you. The Owens house is lit. The owls are out. The aunts are in the kitchen and something is working.
✦ ABOUT THIS BOOKMARK
A richly illustrated scene of the Owens house on Magnolia Street on a New England midsummer night — the particular house that the whole town of Ipswich fears and is drawn to simultaneously, that the neighborhood children dare each other to approach, that smells of something growing and something burning and something else that has no name.
The night sky at the very top is the deep blue-black of a New England summer midnight — warm and dark and alive with the particular energy of a midsummer night that is neither fully safe nor fully dangerous but is completely and specifically itself. Stars scatter through the branches of the old trees surrounding the property. Owls are everywhere in the upper composition — the Owens owls, barn owls and great horned owls rendered naturalistically with their extraordinary silent presence, their eyes catching the starlight, their wings spread in the midsummer dark, the sign that the magic is working.
The Owens house dominates the center of the composition — the old Victorian on Magnolia Street with its porch and its widow's walk and three hundred years of Owens women in its walls and floors and the particular smell of its rooms. The garden presses against every side of the house in the lush abundant overflow of a garden tended with magic for generations — night-blooming flowers open in the darkness, moonflowers and evening primrose and night jasmine releasing their fragrance, herbs at the foundation, the belladonna and the rue and the practical magical plants that the aunts grow for their remedies.
On the porch railing — two glasses of midnight margaritas. Salt rim. Lime wedge vivid green in the moonlight. The particular ritual of two sisters choosing each other in the dark, again, as they always have, as they always will. This is the small daily magic that keeps the Owens women whole.
A salt circle in the garden path — barely visible in the moonlight but present because protection is practical and the aunts know this. The aunts' brooms leaning against the porch — working brooms, sweeping brooms, the brooms of women who clean their floors and their paths and understand that cleaning is also a form of care.
The kitchen window glows warm amber in the lower portion of the scene — the aunts' kitchen, the center of the Owens magic, always warm. Through the glass the herbs hang drying from the ceiling beams, jars line every shelf, a black cat is somewhere in the warm interior in the attitude of a creature that has always lived here and always will. A mortar and pestle on the counter worn smooth from generations of use.
The moon rises warm amber through the humid New England air. The owls watch. The magic works. The margaritas are cold. The house on Magnolia Street has been here for three hundred years and will be here for three hundred more.

✦ A NOTE ON THE TAGLINE
Magic is just love with nowhere else to go is not a direct quote from the novel. It is the emotional truth that Alice Hoffman builds toward across the entire Owens family saga — the understanding that the Owens women's magic and the Owens women's love are the same force expressed in different registers, that the curse is made of the same material as the gift and that what makes them dangerous is inseparable from what makes them extraordinary.
Every reader who has loved this novel or this family of novels will feel that line land somewhere specific and warm. That is exactly where it was aimed.
✦ THE MIDNIGHT MARGARITAS
Two glasses on the porch railing. Salt rim. Lime wedge catching the moonlight. Made at midnight because that is when they are made. Made for each other because that is who they are made for.
The midnight margarita is the Owens sisters' most practical magic — the ritual of two people choosing to be exactly where they are with exactly who they are with in the middle of the night when the owls are out and the garden is doing what the garden does and the aunts are in the kitchen and everything is exactly as it should be.
The glasses are in this bookmark. They are cold. They are waiting.
✦ THE OWLS
The owls are always present when the Owens magic is working. They have been in those old trees on Magnolia Street for three hundred years. They watched every Owens woman who ever lived in that house. They are watching now.
They are in the upper portion of this bookmark with their wings spread against the midsummer stars. Their eyes catch the starlight. They are not alarmed. Nothing that happens in that house alarms them anymore. They have seen everything. They are still here.
