ETSY LISTING DESCRIPTION:
She lives where the light goes to become something beautiful.
For every reader who has loved mermaids since before they knew the word mythology — who understood from the first story they ever heard about a creature that lived at the boundary between two worlds that there was something true in that image, something that named a feeling they had always had about the ocean and about the things that live in it that are more than water.
For every reader who knows that the mermaid is not a children's story. She is one of the oldest figures in the human imagination — present in the mythologies of every seafaring culture since people first looked at the ocean and understood that there was something in it that was more than natural. She is the beauty and the danger of the deep water made into a creature, the seduction of a world that is completely alive and completely inaccessible to those who cannot breathe beneath the surface.
For every reader who has stood at the edge of the ocean at night and felt the particular feeling that the ocean at night gives — the feeling that something down there is aware of you and is not alarmed.
For every reader who keeps books about the sea and books about mythology on the same shelf because both are maps of the same deep water.
This bookmark is for all of you. She lives where the light goes to become something beautiful. The deep water is luminous. She is at home in it. She always has been.
✦ ABOUT THIS BOOKMARK
A richly illustrated scene of the ocean at night — not the threatening ocean of a storm but the specific luminous beauty of the ocean on a clear night when the moon is full and its light penetrates the surface and filters down through the water in shafts of silver-blue that grow more diffuse and more beautiful as they descend, the ocean as a world of light made strange and exquisite by the medium it moves through.
The moonlit ocean surface fills the very top of the composition — the full moon silver-white at the top edge, its reflection stretching down through the surface water in a wavering column of silver light, the surface broken gently by the movement of a deep swell that is felt rather than dramatic. Stars scattered in the deep blue-black of the night sky above.
The mermaid herself is present at the center of the composition — not a cartoon mermaid and not any specific trademarked character but the mermaid of mythology and deep imagination, a genuinely beautiful and slightly otherworldly presence in the water. Her tail in the extraordinary iridescent blues and blue-greens and deep teals of the open ocean — the colors that shift from blue to green to silver as the moonlight shafts move through them. Her tail catches the moonlight and scatters it in prismatic points of color throughout the surrounding water. Her hair moves in the slow weightless movement of hair that has never known gravity. She is looking upward — toward the moonlight above, aware of the other world without belonging to it.
Ancient ruins are visible in the deep water around her — the suggestion of a drowned civilization, coral and sea anemone colonizing the stone surfaces. Her collection of surface world objects gathered near the ruins — a compass still pointing north, a waterlogged book whose pages have become translucent but whose words are still faintly present, a glass bottle, a string of pearls. The book is the most important object — spreading its pages in the water like her hair, the stories still there in the deep water the way stories always are after everything else about them has changed.
Bioluminescent creatures throughout the deep water — jellyfish trailing luminous tentacles, small fish with their own cold blue light, the deep ocean as a world of living light. Sea anemone and coral and sea fans in the lower portion in the warm orange and purple and deep red that the deep ocean gives them.
The deeper the eye travels in the composition the more luminous the water becomes. The deep water has its own light entirely separate from the moon above. She lives there. She is entirely at home.

✦ THE WATERLOGGED BOOK
There is a waterlogged book in the mermaid's collection in this bookmark. Its pages have become translucent with water. The words are still faintly visible as warm texture on the translucent pages. The book is spreading its pages in the deep water the way the mermaid's hair spreads — slowly, weightlessly, belonging entirely to the element it is in.
The mermaid collects things from the surface world because she is curious about the world above the water the way the surface world is curious about the world below. The book is the most important thing she has collected. Stories travel further than anything else. Even into the deep water. Even when the pages are translucent. Even when the ink has gone to warm texture. The story is still there.
This bookmark was made for the reader. The book is in the collection. The mermaid knows why.
✦ A NOTE ON THE MERMAID OF MYTHOLOGY
The mermaid has existed in human stories since before writing. She appears in Assyrian mythology, in ancient Greek accounts of the sea, in the folklore of every coastal culture from the British Isles to West Africa to Southeast Asia to the Pacific Islands. Every people who has lived near the deep water has understood that there is something in it that is more than natural and has given that something a face.
She is not the Disney mermaid. She is not the children's story mermaid. She is the mermaid of the deep imagination — the creature that exists at the boundary between the known world and the unknown world, that belongs completely to the deeper of the two, that is beautiful and that is slightly dangerous and that is entirely herself.
This bookmark honors that mermaid. The ancient one. The real one. The one who has been in the stories since before the stories were written down.
✦ THE BIOLUMINESCENT DEEP
The deep water in this bookmark has its own light. Not the moonlight that filters down from above — that light fades as the eye travels deeper in the composition. The deep water light is the bioluminescent light of the creatures that live there — the jellyfish trailing their long luminous tentacles, the small fish with their cold blue glow, the particular living light of the deep ocean that exists entirely independently of the sun and the moon above.
She lives in that light. It is her light. It has always been her light. The moonlight is beautiful but it comes from outside. The bioluminescent light comes from within the world she inhabits and that is the light she belongs to.
